Background of the Study
Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions among children and can lead to significant morbidity and even mortality if not properly managed. Proper medication adherence is critical to controlling asthma symptoms and improving quality of life. However, many pediatric patients in Nigeria struggle with adhering to asthma medication, leading to frequent hospital visits and asthma exacerbations. Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, are crucial in educating caregivers and patients on the importance of medication adherence.
In Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, adherence to asthma medication remains a challenge. This study seeks to investigate the barriers preventing pediatric patients and their caregivers from adhering to prescribed asthma medications and the role of nurses in addressing these challenges.
Statement of the Problem
Asthma medication adherence among pediatric patients in Katsina State is suboptimal, resulting in poor management of asthma symptoms. This could be due to a variety of factors such as lack of awareness, medication side effects, and challenges in communication between nurses, parents, and patients. Addressing these barriers is essential for improving asthma management. This study aims to identify these barriers and explore how nurses can help improve adherence to asthma medication among pediatric patients.
Objectives of the Study
To investigate the barriers to adherence to asthma medication among pediatric patients in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
To assess the role of nurses in promoting medication adherence in pediatric asthma patients.
To explore strategies that can improve adherence to asthma medication in this population.
Research Questions
What are the barriers to adherence to asthma medication among pediatric patients in Katsina State?
What role do nurses play in promoting adherence to asthma medication in pediatric patients?
What strategies can be implemented to improve adherence to asthma medication in pediatric patients?
Research Hypotheses
Barriers such as lack of knowledge, side effects, and poor communication contribute significantly to non-adherence to asthma medication among pediatric patients in Katsina State.
Nurses’ involvement in educating caregivers and patients on asthma management can improve medication adherence.
Implementing targeted strategies such as regular follow-up visits and better communication will enhance adherence to asthma medication.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on pediatric asthma patients attending the Federal Medical Centre in Katsina State. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing certain patients due to socioeconomic factors or geographical barriers.
